Dragonflies Summer Term 2026

This term our Inquiry was all about the Windrush Generation. We asked;

Where are the Americas and what are they like?

Why did people travel to England from the West Indies after WW2?

What were the experiences of the Windrush generation in Bristol and beyond? 

What are the legacies of the Windrush generation in Britain today?

In history, we explored sources such as photographs, music and diaries to understand the lives of people who travelled to Britain from the West Indies. We looked at maps of the West Indies in geography and created informative reports on Caribbean countries of our choice. In music we continued to improve our skills on the ukulele as well as learning about the genres of Ska and Reggae. We even used body percussion to learn and perform ‘Three Little Birds.’ We created sculptures of tropical fruits inspired by the local artist Veronica Ryan in art and read, performed and created our own poetry inspired by the work of Benjamin Zephaniah in English.

In science we learnt about plants; what they need to survive, the roles of the parts of the plant, how plants are pollinated and how seeds are dispersed. We honed our skills in athletics in P.E. in preparation for our amazing East Brent Sports Day in which we shone! Our sporting skills were also represented in our participation in the first ever Wessex Trust Swimming Gala. We were visited by the Kingfisher Project judges whom we performed our wonderful ‘Nature Trail’ poems to. These were inspired by our personal experiences of nature in our gardens and school grounds. In our worship together we prepared for our end of year services at both the Bath Diocese ‘Moving Up’ celebration and our own in ‘St Mary’s during which we will say goodbye to East Brent alongside our school and wider community.
